In This Temple Minister Darryl Cherry & The Lincoln Heights Mass Choir “The trumpeters and singers joined in unison, as with one voice, to give praise and thanks to the Lord. Accompanied by trumpets, cymbals and other instruments, they raised their voices in praise to the Lord and sang: ‘He is good; his love endures forever.’ Then the temple of the Lord was filled with a cloud, and the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled the temple of God.” —The Children of Israel, Returning From Captivity 2 Chronicles 5:13-14 |
Welcome To Lincoln Heights Dr. Elliott Cuff, Pastor
|
In less than two years
as the Minister of Music at Lincoln Heights Missionary Baptist Church, Minister Darryl Cherry has managed to lead the release of the church’s first live recording in its 81 year history. In This Temple, the CD’s title track is scheduled for release on October 11, 2009. Cherry’s talent as a virtuoso pianist and prolific composer is evident in the album as he combines classical and blues styles to create a unique tapestry of progressive and traditional music which has the potential to define the next evolution of gospel music.
The Reverend Darryl F. Cherry is an ordained Baptist minister, professional pianist, organist and songwriter who has worked with several national recording artists in the Gospel music industry and has supported a number of churches in the New York tri-state area. A devotee of the late Maestro, Minister Thomas A. Whitfield, Cherry fuses Gospel and jazz styles with classical baroque phrasing to create a sound uniquely his own. The former director of New York’s prestigious Columbia University’s Gospel choir currently serves as minister of music at Lincoln Heights Missionary Baptist Church, following in the footsteps of the late Dr. Charles Fold. Reverend Darryl Cherry is the writer and producer of In This Temple. Recently, Cherry was recognized nationally for submitting his song, Waiting For An Answer to the National Baptist Convention’s 129th Annual Session in Memphis, TN. This song was performed by the National Baptist Convention Choir at the final address of two-term President Dr. William J. Shaw in front of over 40,000 attendees.
The Lincoln Heights Missionary Baptist
Church Choir was featured in the hit movie A Rage in Harlem, accompanied the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Jennifer Holiday. The church and choir celebrated the release of their new album with a CD Release Listening Celebration at 4:00pm on October 11, 2009 in the church’s fellowship hall and presented its 62nd Annual Concert at 6:00pm in the sanctuary. Operating independently, the album highlights impressive songs like: "In This Temple", "Waiting For An Answer", "We Worship You", "Running For Jesus", and the soul stirring "Were You There". The media was invited to highlight the release of Lincoln Heights’ album, In This Temple and the continued legacy of Dr. Charles Fold.
Media copies of the CD are available upon request and included in the press kit. Consumers will be able to purchase the CD online at www.lincolnheights.us and for $10.00 at the concert.

Choir Releases Debut Album
For more than 40 years the late Dr. Charles Fold led the Lincoln
Heights Missionary Baptist Church choir. Dr. Fold won a Grammy
in 1980 with his group "The Charles Fold Singers" for song "Lord
Let Me Be An Instrument". Dr. Fold wanted to record an album
with his church choir, but never got the chance. Dr. Fold died
in 2006, and today, Minister Darryl Cherry leads the choir. "Its
been my mission to accomplish his goal for him," said Cherry. "I
know this is something he's always wanted to do prior to his
passing, and I just felt compelled to fulfill this mission for
him." This Sunday, the church celebrated the
accomplishment of that dream with a CD release party. The album
is called In This Temple. The
music is best described as a mix of styles and sounds.
F. Christopher Goins, from Eden Park, joined the choir three
years ago. He said, "People are going to hear a wide variety of
music from traditional to classical single song there is a
message from god that they are going to be able to connect to.
It just touches everyone and just the small parts that I've
heard today I can't wait to break open by CD on they way home
tonight because I will be playing it throughout the week," said
Mary Ann Haynes, a 20-year veteran of the choir from Fairfield.
Leaders of the group hope this is just the beginning. Cherry
hopes to sign a national recording contract and says they
already have some promising leads. For Haynes, the goal is
a little higher. "I envision us doing, in another couple of
years is being at the Grammy's ourselves and also winning one of
those awards."
